Fashion for Future Bolzano 2024, as part of the transnational initiative Fashion Revolution Week, provided a vibrant forum to discuss alternative ideas to the prevalent consumption paradigms in the fashion industry. Together with performance activist Nina Sandino and as part of the Artistic Research project From Toxic Textile Troubles to Fabulous Fibre Futures we had the pleasure to develop different participatory formats aiming to inspire design students and the public to critically engage with our material legacies in times of fast fashion.
The workshop Beyond Labels, led by Nina Sandino, used a series of performative practices to explore the lack of care in the supply and disposal chain of our clothing. During the half-day format, we reflected on our relationship with clothing, the concept of planned obsolescence, fleeting trends, perishable materials and about repair as a post-capitalist care practice. The workshop concluded with Nina Sandino presenting a solo edition of their performance piece Elsewhere.
The experimental cooking session The P(L)astic Supper provided a hybrid environment between science lab and community kitchen. Together with participants we explored organic matter to create alternative algae based and even edible synthetic textile materials. Beyond the act of consuming the textiles created, the subsequent lunch experience became a moment for collective reflection—on our relationship with materials, the cycles of decay and renewal, and our connection to the environment.
In the course Inside Dust students of the Faculty of Art and Design imagined different ways to get ahold of airborne plastic microfibres. Their ideas ranged from sticky shoes to massive air filters!
For the conference, I had the pleasure of giving the keynote "From Toxic Textile Troubles to Fabulous Fibre Futures", where I presented a range of alternative strategies for genuinely regenerative practices beyond the modern phenomenon of “The Recycling”.
